Show Cause: Caring for Families With Sick or Injured Children

Every parent wants their child to be healthy, happy, and thriving. Sadly, that's not always the case. In times of illness, especially when essential care is distant, Ronald McDonald House Charities offers invaluable support to families in need.

When a child requires medical treatment far from home, Ronald McDonald House programs become a beacon of solace, providing families with the comfort, assistance, and resources they need. These programs enable families to remain close to their child’s hospital, fostering an environment of togetherness where they can find respite, enjoy homemade meals prepared by volunteers, and receive compassionate support from dedicated staff members.

Studies indicate that patients whose families stay at a Ronald McDonald House often face severe illnesses, travel the farthest distances, and endure prolonged hospital stays. Through the comprehensive care and support services offered, families receive essential psychological benefits, experience better sleep, and report more positive hospital interactions with a greater ability to participate in their child’s treatment journey.

Serving Families in More Ways

Expanding their scope beyond housing, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms offer additional sanctuaries within hospital settings, providing families with tranquil spaces to rejuvenate, gather strength, and even attend to practical needs like laundry, all while remaining close to their child’s care facility.

The organization has even committed to extending access to quality healthcare worldwide. Ronald McDonald Care Mobile programs have been established in the United States and nine other nations. These mobile units deliver vital dental, medical, and healthcare services to children under 21 in underserved communities, collaborating with local clinics to ensure holistic care reaches those who need it most.

A Legacy of Care

The first Ronald McDonald House was founded 50 years ago by pediatric oncologist Dr. Audrey Evans in Philadelphia, with the second established a few years later by Dr. Edward Baum and the Marino family in Chicago. Today, the impact of Ronald McDonald House Charities is felt globally, with nearly 400 House programs and over 280 supplementary initiatives serving millions of families annually. Rain is showing cause this month by supporting Ronald McDonald House’s wonderful mission to help improve the health and well-being of children.
