Show Cause Against Famine: Supporting World Central Kitchen’s Critical Mission in Gaza
By John Reed | 08.21.2025
We have been longtime fans of Chef José Andrés and his global nonprofit, World Central Kitchen. Today, we’re again “showing cause” by supporting WCK’s efforts in Gaza, where nearly all 2.3 million residents experience acute food insecurity.
The scale of need in Gaza is unprecedented.
- Through mid-August 2025, at least 100 children in Gaza have died from malnutrition and hunger, according to the United Nations.
- From July 1 to mid-August, 45 children reportedly died, with 106 child deaths from October 2023 to date, as reported on reliefweb.com.
- Recent World Health Organization reports indicate that in July 2025 alone, nearly 12,000 children under five were acutely malnourished out of 136,000 screened ( about 9%), and the rate of severe acute malnutrition among malnourished children rose from 12% (March-May 2025) to 18% (June-July 2025).
- Most of Gaza has reached famine thresholds for food consumption, and more than half a million people are facing “catastrophic” food insecurity, with up to 81% of households reporting inadequate food consumption, according to Reuters.
WCK has shown remarkable resilience and dedication in Gaza, having served over 85 million meals to displaced families despite severe restrictions on humanitarian aid. WCK has run over 60 community kitchens throughout the region, while their teams have distributed over 2 million pounds of food aid to families in desperate need. Because of their “chefs-on-the-ground” approach, WCK’s teams have maintained field kitchens, delivered fresh bread, and provided clean water even when facing supply shortages and operational challenges.
As much as we respect and applaud WCK’s efforts in Gaza, Ukraine, and around the globe, we long for a time when they are no longer needed.
Below, Chef Andrés describes what he has witnessed in Gaza.
