We Show Cause for One of Our Own Through Central Ohio Spina Bifida Alliance

By John Reed | 02.07.2024

Daniel Rako was born with spina bifida, a neural tube birth defect that prevents the backbone from fully protecting the spinal cord. Despite his condition and its challenges, he lived an extraordinary and impactful life before passing away on January 19, 2024, at the age of 26.

Rain’s Jill Clark is Daniel’s mother, but more than that, she was his champion, lead caregiver, chauffeur, confidante, and biggest fan, and her love is boundless. If you’ve met Jill, you know her care and concern go beyond family and friends to others. She gives big.

Central Ohio Spina Bifida Alliance

When Daniel was a child, resources and support for kids with spina bifida in and around his home in Columbus, Ohio, were lacking. Although the Central Ohio Spina Bifida Alliance (COSBA) existed, it was dormant. So, Jill and other parents resurrected the non-profit in 2001, giving it the energy necessary to steward its mission.

Since then, COSBA has supported families with newly diagnosed children, organized social gatherings, helped with spina bifida-related financial needs, and fostered a welcoming, close-knit community for kids and parents.

For Daniel and Jill

Rain has proudly given to various organizations, but we now “show cause” for COSBA for reasons that are personal and heartbreaking.

We take inspiration from Daniel and Jill, and we honor his memory. You can learn more about this remarkable young man here.
