Show Cause: Rain Supports Humanitarian Efforts in Israel and Gaza

By John Reed | 11.01.2023

Hamas’s surprise and merciless attack on Israel was a stark reminder that there is evil in this world. With countless dead on the day of the attack and since, as well as hostages who have yet to be released, war in Gaza and perhaps the region is now a reality.

Certain aspects of war are both foreseeable and unpredictable. Civilians and non-combatants, many of them children, will be scarred, injured, or maimed. Property and belongings will be destroyed. Resources will fall into short supply. Of the ways I can direct Rain to “show cause” during this conflict, these are the needs we choose to address by giving financial support to the following humanitarian organizations working inside both Israel and Gaza:

Doctors Without Borders

As of this writing, Doctors Without Borders is preparing to deliver medical and humanitarian supplies to Gaza as access opens there and at the Rafah crossing. According to the group’s website, “We are not currently running medical programs in Israel, as it has strong emergency and health systems. We have offered our support to Israeli hospitals treating a high number of casualties.”

Save the Children International (Children’s Emergency Fund)

As Save the Children proclaims on its website: “All children affected by the violence in Israel and Gaza must be supported to find safety. All children captured must be released immediately and unconditionally. Humanitarian assistance must be scaled up to meet the demands of the crisis. Aid must not be withheld from children.”

International Committee of the Red Cross

ICRC is an impartial, neutral, and independent organization with a humanitarian mission to help victims in areas of armed conflict and violence, including Israel and the occupied territories. It should be noted that ICRC workers face personal risk — four ICRC paramedics were killed in Gaza the week after Hamas’ October 7th attack.

I cannot say Rain is “pleased” or “proud” to donate to these organizations, for nothing is pleasing or satisfying about it. We do what we can for those who cannot.

Please, let there be peace soon.
