Health and wellness headlines constantly tout the importance of adequate sleep, and it’s even more crucial for kids. As their bodies and brains grow, children who get consistent restful sleep have better mental health and school performance.
But too many children don’t have their own beds due to poverty, recent homelessness, or a move to foster care. Many share beds with family members, sleep on inflatable mattresses or couches, or bedding spread on the floor. Luckily, Building Beds 4 Kids, a non-profit organization serving southeast Michigan, has been building and donating beds to kids with no beds since 2019.
Founders Sam and Becky Misuraca created the all-volunteer organization and collaborate with agencies and community service organizations to identify families who need beds for their children. The volunteer workforce, including a group of developmentally disabled young adults from the Berkley Schools Adult Transition Program, constructs the basic twin-sized wooden bed frames provided to families along with mattresses and basic bedding at no cost.
Increasing Access
The Misuracas initially volunteered with other local organizations that produced beds but were bothered that some charged a fee or restricted bed recipients to certain zip codes. They created their own 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and workshop in Oak Park, Michigan, to make their beds available to any child in need for free. In less than five years, they have helped over 4500 kids go to sleep in their own beds. Rain is showing cause this month by supporting Building Beds’ wonderful mission to help kids get a good night’s sleep.
