Show Cause for Ukraine: World Central Kitchen Champions Food as a Human Right

Rain BDM is doing its small part to help Ukrainian residents and refugees by contributing to organizations that provide shelter, healthcare, and sustenance. We’ve long considered Chef José Andrés a hero who sees no borders in championing food as a human right, and we proudly support his global nonprofit, World Central Kitchen.

The war in Ukraine is also a war on food. Russia has disrupted imports and exports at the borders, straining local and worldwide food supplies. Despite the barriers, WCK’s Ukrainian Food Fighters and #ChefsForUkraine show up every day to provide nourishing meals and food aid to Ukrainian residents and refugees. But that relief is not without its dangers; since arriving on the scene, its cargo trains and restaurant and farm partners have been shelled by missiles.

Notwithstanding the challenges, WCK has served more than 100 million meals in Ukraine.

No one can describe what World Central Kitchen does and how they do it better than Chef Andrés. As he tells the story:

World Central Kitchen started with a simple idea at home with my wife Patricia: when people are hungry, send in cooks…. We don’t just deliver raw ingredients and expect people to fend for themselves. And we don’t just dump free food into a disaster zone: we source and hire locally wherever we can, to jump-start economic recovery through food. Cooking and eating together is what makes us human…. Sometimes you just have to show up with a sandwich or some warm rice and beans. You’d be amazed at the power of a plate of food.

Rain BDM believes in Chef José Andrés, World Central Kitchen, the fight against hunger, food as a human right, and the strength and determination of Ukraine. Admittedly, our donations are minor compared to the scale of the hardship, but we continue to Show Cause.
