I could use this space to tell you my thoughts on how appalled the framers of the Constitution would be at the ways in which their words have been perverted, how the gun lobby bankrolls politicians at all levels of government, how active shooter drills are part of the academic experience, and how we risk becoming increasingly desensitized to mass shootings that kill worshippers, concertgoers, movie watchers, bank patrons, college students, and kindergarteners.
But I won’t. Instead, let’s focus on an organization that’s taking a logical approach to an illogical problem. This month, Rain is proud to show cause for Everytown, America’s largest gun violence prevention organization.
Everytown pursues evidence-based solutions to end needless injury and death, such as:
- Registering voters who can affect change at the ballot box.
- Electing candidates who will govern with gun safety in mind.
- Demanding action from our elected officials.
- Changing how America thinks about gun violence.
Every day, 120 Americans are killed with guns.
Not just one group, Everytown is a collection of individuals and groups nearly 10 million strong, including:
- More than 2,000 current and former mayors comprising the bipartisan coalition, Mayors Against Illegal Guns
- Moms Demand Action, the nation’s largest grassroots volunteer network working to end gun violence, with more than 700 local groups and a chapter in every state.
- Students Demand Action, a national movement of high school and college-aged volunteers working to end gun violence.
- Everytown Survivor Network, a nationwide community of survivors working to end gun violence.
Between 2015 and 2022, more than 19,000 people were shot and killed or wounded in the U.S. in mass shootings.
In our country, there are strong opposing opinions on gun control, gun sense, the Second Amendment, treatment for mental health, concealed carry, assault rifle and bump-stock legislation, and other buzzwords and spin surrounding the epidemic of gun violence in the United States. We will never achieve a consensus to eliminate guns, but we can all agree that needless deaths and violence must stop.
