Show Cause vs. COVID-19: Haven of Oakland County

domestic_violence_shelterThe COVID-19 lockdown may have helped flatten the coronavirus infection curve, but it has caused an increase in domestic violence and sexual assault locally and across the U.S. Victims have been forced to remain with abusive spouses or partners, unable to escape dangerous situations in their own homes. The need for services like those provided by Haven of Oakland County has never been more critical.

Haven provides shelter, counseling, and advocacy to nearly 30,000 individuals annually in the northern region of Metro Detroit. The organization, which relies heavily on donors, expressed concern over a drop in donations during the pandemic. We were proud to “Show Cause” and contribute necessary funds to support Haven’s important mission.

Despite strict state guidelines, Haven complied with Michigan’s executive orders and continued to offer its services to the community. As phone calls spiked incidents of domestic abuse rose, they maintained operation of a crisis hotline, assisted victims by developing a safety plan, and provided emergency shelter to those in immediate danger. Thanks to the dedication and devotion of the Haven team, those services never lapsed.
