Show Cause vs. COVID-19: Detroit Beats COVID-19! and the State of Michigan’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Initiative
By Rain BDM | 06.23.2020
Seemingly overnight, high hospitalization rates from COVID-19 and a rapid jump in infections thrust Detroit and Michigan into the national spotlight. Although government officials mounted an aggressive response, help was required throughout the region from citizens and local leaders to control the outbreak. And that help arrived in many forms, including some creative community partnerships.
Rain team members Traci Gentilozzi and Maureen Hanawalt chose to “Show Cause” for two programs addressing coronavirus in and around Michigan.
- If you’ve read Tuesdays with Morrie or The Five People You Meet in Heaven, then you – like Maureen – know bestselling author Mitch Albom. Through his “S.A.Y. Detroit initiative, he created Detroit Beats COVID-19!, a six-point community program designed to lend help where it was needed within the city.
- A resident of Lansing, Michigan’s capitol, Traci drew our attention to the state’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Initiative, which uses donated funds for essential relief services, such as assistance for children and families.
Both programs have offered a range of services to a city and state that continues to struggle amidst the pandemic, such as:
- Increased access to testing, including Detroit Beats COVID-19!’s mobile testing unit, which has been deployed to some of Detroit’s most impoverished areas to reach disadvantaged residents
- Delivery of meals to seniors and individuals with disabilities;
- Frontline gear for essential workers; and
- Food and remote learning programs for school-aged children in areas where access to education resources are compromised or nonexistent.
This is the final entry (for now) in our “Show Cause” spotlight on organizations seeking to alleviate the public health threat and economic impact of the coronavirus, but we encourage you to learn more and support programs like these through monetary donations, volunteering, or simple word of mouth.
