Show Cause: Support for L.A. Wildfire Survivors and Responders

Natural disasters are an unfortunate, often tragic, fact of life on earth. But no matter how aware we are of our changing climate, few are prepared for the instant devastation caused by hurricanes, tornadoes, mudslides, and—now— ferocious fires in southern California. With more than 27 lives lost, thousands of homes and businesses destroyed, and over 180,000 people displaced, returning to normal life will be a huge challenge for so many in L.A. County.

Television’s Mr. Rogers once said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” Thankfully, many local organizations provide on-the-spot assistance for needy people and animals.

For 2025, Rain is directing our Show Cause efforts to nonprofits that address emergency needs—organizations like those on the frontlines of the California fires, helping displaced families, pets, and communities that have lost everything.

This month, we are proud to “show cause” for these organizations:

The Los Angeles Area Food Bank is working with government agencies, nonprofit and faith-based partners, and others to respond to the fires throughout Los Angeles County. In addition to collecting donated food and non-food items and coordinating volunteers, the Food Bank is collecting financial donations to ensure local food pantries are stocked.

Pasadena Humane Society has emergency responders on the ground providing lifesaving assistance, including animal evacuation, care for injured animals, and resources such as food and supplies for animals who remain in the fire zone. They also provide emergency boarding for lost pets and an emergency pet pantry for pet owners in need.

California Community Foundation has activated its Wildfire Recovery Fund for disaster and recovery efforts that support an array of critical recovery services, including housing, case management, mental health, and medical care for displaced residents. It also aids in rebuilding essential infrastructure like emergency communication systems and offers financial disaster assistance, labor law education, and immigration services to low-wage workers and immigrant families.

Show Cause is Rain’s ongoing community involvement initiative that supports causes that are meaningful to our team. We hope you will join us in supporting helpers worldwide this year.
