Show Cause: HBCUs, the UNCF, and Black History Month

Lifelong learning through education is the basis for common understanding, meaningful dialogue, and an appreciation for diverse experiences and perspectives.

As Black History Month 2023 comes to a close, Rain is honored to “show cause” for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and the importance of education at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

The UNCF works to build “a robust and nationally-recognized pipeline of under-represented students” and “ensure that our network of member institutions is a respected model of best practice in moving students to and through college.” The UNCF includes 37 HBCUs, providing support to maintain strong academic programs and make tuition affordable to their students. Nearly 40 percent of UNCF-supported students are the first in their families to attend college, and more than 70 percent have demonstrated serious financial need.

February is the month dedicated to recognizing the profoundly layered history and contributions of African Americans. Honoring and celebrating this history and the changemakers who forged it shouldn’t be limited to four weeks each year, nor should diversity, equity, and inclusion be a short-term initiative.

Regularly entertaining different and distinct voices at the table results in better outcomes for all. As the late Dr. Maya Angelou famously said, “When you know better, you do better.”

Show Cause is Rain’s way of supporting causes important to our team, spotlighting their involvement, and making a collective difference in the communities in which we live. To learn more about the United Negro College Fund, its member institutions, and how you can help, please visit the UNCF website.
